Empty Bowls - El Paso
Empty Bowls events happen all over the world. They began in the United States about 15 years. For the last four years the EPCC Art Student Society has chosen to create an Empty Bowls event in El Paso as a public service project. Our Empty Bowls Event is a meal to which the public is invited; a ticket cost $10.00. When people entered the site of the meal what they first see is a beautiful display of art. Hand-made bowls -- folk art! A person attending chooses one of these beautiful bowls and then sits down to a bowl of soup, a piece of bread, and good company. Of course, the person takes the beautiful bowl home to enjoy and to remember. All, of the money collected from the dinners (over $13000.00 so far) has gone to the West Texas Food Bank to help eliminate hunger in El Paso County. El Paso Community College has let us use the Transmountain Cafeteria area for the dinners, where the Culinary Arts Discipline has its classrooms and dining rooms. EPCC Culinary Arts Department with Chefs from the American Chef Federation of Greater El Paso Chapter have provided delicious food. One year the Classified Staff Association provided bowls and utensils. The second and third years the Wild Women of West Texas Red Hat Society provided water, bowls, and utensils. Pete Cervantes provided the water this year. The Jazz Unlimited Big Band has provided beautiful music during the dinners. ARIOSA String Quartet gave us their beautiful music and also Memento Mori. Many, many individuals and organizations made bowls and contributed to the success including EPCC faculty and staff, students and administrators.
